How do apprenticeships work?
Carpentry apprenticeships – like most other apprenticeships in Australia – are available to anyone of working age. A secondary school certificate or any other qualification isn’t required; you simply need to be passionate about your area of work and be willing to listen and learn on the job.
People enter apprenticeships from all walks of life; high school leavers, adults looking for a career change and also those who are re-entering the workforce. It’s possible to begin your apprenticeship even if you are still at school completing your final years.
Depending on the company you work with, you may be able to carry out your apprenticeship full-time, part-time or via school. Here at Mulberry, we are open to all options; ultimately, it depends on the individual and our current work demand.
During the course of your apprenticeship, you will earn a wage that is scaled depending on your experience and how far along you are in terms of your training. Once completed, an Australian apprenticeship is a nationally recognised qualification – Mulberry’s carpentry apprenticeships are no exception. In some cases, these qualifications may also be held in high regard on an international scale.
What do carpenters actually do?
A carpenter is essentially a tradesperson who works primarily with wood. They construct, erect, install, repair and finish both wooden and metal structures and fixtures across a broad range of buildings – from homes and retail spaces through to large-scale commercial buildings.
Some typical jobs a carpenter may carry out include:
- Installation of doors and windows
- Construction of a house frames
- Construction of formwork for concrete
- Timber floors
- Construction and installation of pre-fabricated buildings
- Cut and assemble timber furniture, cabinetry etc.
If you are thinking about becoming a carpenter, there are a few things you need to consider. Firstly, it’s important that you enjoy working with your hands as this forms the majority of work – and you should also enjoy working outdoors.
In terms of money, the income of a fully qualified carpenter varies. It depends whether you work as part of a large building company, a smaller company, opt to work independently (contractor/sub-contractor) or start your own business.
